The Reality

What California Auto Shops Face

California auto shops face customer-vehicle exposures, lift accidents, chemical hazards, and high-rate WC class codes. These are the real problems we solve every day.

!

Customer Vehicles in Custody

Customer vehicles in your shop are YOUR responsibility — theft, fire, collision, vandalism. Garagekeepers insurance covers this. Standard garage liability does NOT. Most direct-to-consumer carriers won't write it.

!

Lift Accidents & Catastrophic Injury

A lift failure or vehicle drop can cause six- and seven-figure injury claims. California workers comp class codes for auto repair (8380, 8392) reflect this risk with higher premiums.

!

Chemical Exposure (Body & Paint)

Body shops and paint operations handle solvents, paints, brake cleaners, and refrigerants. Pollution liability is excluded from most general liability policies — a separate endorsement or standalone policy is required.

!

Body Shop Underwriting Difficulty

Most carriers won't write body shops at all due to paint operations. The ones that will charge higher rates. We have specialty markets that write body shops at competitive prices.

!

Tool & Equipment Theft

Auto shops are frequent theft targets in California. Air compressors, diagnostic equipment, lifts, scan tools — easily $50K-$200K in equipment exposed. Property coverage with proper limits matters.

The Complete Coverage Stack

The Coverage Stack Every Auto Shop Needs

California auto shops need 6-8 coverages working together. Garagekeepers is the critical one most direct-to-consumer carriers will not write.

Garage Liability

Covers third-party injury and property damage from your shop operations — a customer slipping in your bay, a vehicle damaged in your lot, or operational injuries to non-employees. Different from garagekeepers (which covers customer vehicles in YOUR custody).

Foundation coverage. Required by BAR and most commercial leases.

Garagekeepers Insurance

Customer vehicles in your custody, care, or control. Covers theft, fire, collision, and vandalism while their car is on your lot or in your bay. Standard general liability does NOT cover this. Three coverage forms: Legal Liability (cheapest), Direct Excess, and Direct Primary (most comprehensive).

Most-confused coverage in auto shops. The form matters enormously — we explain the difference.

Workers' Compensation

Required by California law for any auto shop with employees. Class code 8380 (auto repair) and 8392 (body repair) carry higher rates than office work because of lift risks, cuts, burns, and chemical exposure. Misclassification is common — body shop work in a general repair operation gets wrong codes.

We audit class codes for free. Wrong codes are the #1 reason auto shops overpay.

Property Insurance

Building (if owned), tenant improvements (if leased), lifts, diagnostic equipment, tools, and parts inventory. Replacement cost valuation is essential. Co-insurance penalties on under-insured property cut claim payouts in half — a $200K shop with $100K coverage gets 50% of any partial loss.

Many shops are under-insured because property values rose faster than they realized.

Commercial Auto

Loaner cars, tow trucks, parts vehicles, employee transportation vans, and any shop-owned vehicles. Test drives are a gray area — make sure your policy covers them explicitly. Hired and non-owned auto liability protects you when employees use their own vehicles for parts runs.

Test-drive coverage varies by carrier. We make sure yours is explicit.

Pollution Liability

Solvents, paints, brake fluid, refrigerants, waste oil, and used parts. California environmental regulations are strict — even small spills can trigger cleanup costs in five figures. Most general liability policies EXCLUDE pollution. A standalone policy or endorsement is essential for body shops.

Critical for body shops and paint operations. Required by many commercial leases.

Business Income

If a fire, lift failure, or covered loss closes you for weeks, business income coverage pays rent, payroll, and lost profits while you rebuild. Auto shops with high overhead and rent need 12-month minimum coverage periods. Often the difference between staying open and closing.

Most overlooked coverage. We size limits based on your actual P&L.

Umbrella / Excess Liability

California is one of the most lawsuit-friendly states. A lift accident or test-drive collision can quickly exceed your garage liability or commercial auto limits. Umbrella layers $1-5M on top of all primary liability for relatively low premium. Many landlords now require it.

Especially important for shops with lifts, paint operations, or fleet vehicles.

Most auto shops need 5-7 of these working together. We package them properly so there are no gaps and no double-coverage waste.

Broker vs. Direct-to-Consumer

Why Use a Broker for Auto Shop Insurance

Buying auto shop insurance direct from a carrier means one carrier's product — and most won't even write garagekeepers properly. We shop 50+ California carriers including automotive specialty markets.

Garagekeepers Done Right

Garagekeepers has three coverage forms — Legal Liability (cheap, limited), Direct Excess (mid), and Direct Primary (best). DTC carriers default to Legal Liability and don't explain the difference. We pick the right form for your operation.

Body Shop & Paint Specialists

Most carriers won't write body shops. The ones that will charge premiums for paint operations. We have specialty markets that price body shops competitively and write pollution liability seamlessly.

BAR Compliance Handled

California Bureau of Automotive Repair requires proof of garage liability. We file certificates directly with BAR and track renewals so your registration stays active without you thinking about it.

Class Code & Audit Defense

Auto repair class codes (8380, 8392, 8391) get mixed up constantly. Body work coded as general repair, paint operations coded as auto sales — costly mistakes. We audit your codes free and dispute incorrect ex-mod calculations.

The technical details that separate California auto shop insurance from generic small-business insurance. We handle all of this.

BAR License & Garage Liability

California Bureau of Automotive Repair requires proof of garage liability at registration and renewal. We file certificates with BAR directly and track renewals automatically.

Garagekeepers Coverage Forms

Three forms exist: Legal Liability (carrier pays only when you're proven legally liable — cheap, leaves gaps), Direct Excess (better), Direct Primary (best, covers customer vehicles regardless of fault). Pick wrong and customers leave you when their cars are stolen.

Hazardous Waste Disposal

California environmental regs require manifest-tracked disposal of waste oil, solvents, refrigerants, and batteries. Pollution liability covers cleanup and third-party claims if disposal goes wrong. Required by most commercial leases.

Smog Check Station Bonding

BAR licensed smog check stations require a $5,000 surety bond. We write these in 24 hours and track annual renewals.

Test-Drive Coverage

Most commercial auto policies cover test drives, but limits and exclusions vary. Garagekeepers policies are even more variable. We review the exact policy language so coverage is explicit, not assumed.

Loaner Vehicle Operations

Loaner cars need to be on a commercial auto policy with proper customer-driver coverage. Many shops use personal auto policies for loaners — completely uncovered. We close this gap.

Workers Comp Class Codes

Auto Shop Workers Comp Class Codes

Auto shop class codes vary by service type. Body shops, mechanics, tire shops, and detail shops each have different rates. Misclassification is common and expensive.

Frequently Asked

Auto Shop Insurance FAQ

All California auto shops with employees must carry workers' compensation insurance. BAR-licensed repair facilities must carry garage liability ($300K-$1M typical). Garagekeepers insurance is essential — customer vehicles in your custody require it, and standard general liability does NOT cover them. Body shops and paint operations also need pollution liability. Smog check stations need a $5,000 surety bond.

Garage liability covers third-party injury or property damage from your operations — a customer slipping in your shop, or your work damaging someone else's property off-premises. Garagekeepers covers damage to customer vehicles in YOUR custody — a customer car stolen overnight, damaged in your bay, or hit by your lift. You need both. They cover completely different exposures. Most direct-to-consumer carriers won't even quote garagekeepers.

Highly recommended. Body shops and paint operations handle solvents, paints, refrigerants, and chemicals that can trigger environmental cleanup costs. Most general liability policies EXCLUDE pollution claims entirely. A standalone pollution liability policy or endorsement covers cleanup, third-party claims, and gradual pollution discovery. The cost is modest; the protection is essential.

California workers comp for auto shops uses class codes 8380 (general repair) and 8392 (body repair). Body work carries higher premiums because of paint exposure and physical strain. Premium is calculated on payroll × class code rate × experience modifier. We audit class codes regularly — wrong codes are the #1 reason auto shops overpay. Mix of services (general repair + body work) requires careful coding.

Garagekeepers coverage typically extends to test drives, but limits and exclusions vary dramatically by carrier. Some policies only cover the vehicle on your premises; others extend to road tests; others exclude commercial routes. We review the exact policy language during placement so coverage is explicit. Don't assume — verify.
